This subject has itself come near to being central in work on the Old Testament and the New.

Here it is studied mainly with regard to ancient Judaism, and patristic and mediaeval Christianity. The volume represents collaboration between the Catholic Theological University of Utrecht and Bar-Ilan University, beginning with a joint conference in 1993; the sixteen contributions, all in English, include one or two from other institutions.

On the Old Testament, K. Seybold finds the place-name Moriah in Ps. 76: 12, and P. Beentjes considers Jerusalem in the Chronicler, but there is no reassessment of work on the centrality of Jerusalem as envisaged in the psalms and the Jerusalem cultus. Then eight contributions, the backbone of the collection, deal with Hasmonaean and Herodian times–although the specifically Herodian role in the adornment and advancement of Jerusalem is not considered. A substantial essay by J. Schwartz asks whether the birah which in the Mishnah seems to form part of the temple-site (in I Chron. 29 the same word probably refers to the whole temple) was the fortress rebuilt as Antonia, or another fortress…
