Pelican books, A 1788
(Israel — Politics and government — 1948-1967)
At the time this book was written in 1974, Maxim Ghilan (1931-2005) was “a journalist of international renown. He created Israel’s first and only tribune of the Left and was, in 1961, secretary general of the Israeli New Left Party. He left Israel in 1969, having been forced to reconsider his nationalist Jewish stand.” He was also the co-founder, in 1971, of the periodical ‘Israel and Palestine Political Report,’ as well as the director of the International Jewish Peace Union, the first Jewish organization to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as a partner in dialogue.
He wrote in the Foreword, “For there is no doubt that it is only if separated from the international Jewish question that the Middle East can become what one day I hope it will become: a complex, non-sectarian, multi-cultural and multi-racial United States of the Area…
This is the book of a Middle Eastern patriot, conscious that his loyalty is to a not-yet-born entity.”
